Did you know…?

The origin story of żurek is quite fascinating. It is said to have been invented by a baker and innkeeper from a village near Poznań, known for serving watered-down drinks and poor-quality food. The villagers grew tired of his practices and paid someone to make a bet with the baker: that he would eat the worst soup the man could prepare, with a pouch of gold at stake.
The stingy baker, not giving it much thought, poured boiling water over sourdough starter, added some vegetables, sausage, and mushrooms, and to improve the aroma, seasoned it with garlic and goosefoot (a wild herb). The soup turned out to be so tasty that the guest ate it all and began praising it to the rest of the tavern’s patrons.
As a result, the baker lost the bet, forfeited his fortune, and was forced to move to Silesia.
